Home Business Idea For Gardeners!

Springwise is a website that keeps an eye out for all the latest new and unique business ideas and I saw one today I thought would be ideal for home schooling families! Your Backyard Farmer is a service that goes to people’s homes…er…back yards, and plants a garden for them.

They are really onto something, IMHO, because I don’t know if you’ve noticed it lately, but not only has the price of fresh produce gone up, but the quality seems to going down. The movement to only buy food produced within 50 miles of your home is gaining momentum, and it could mean good news for home school families.

Now, I know that home school families don’t have a corner on the gardening market, but it does seem to be a commonly practiced hobby with them. The really great thing about Your Backyard Farmer is they don’t require a large piece of land. Only a 10′ x 10′ is needed to feed a couple, bigger families, bigger plot. However, the best reason it fits home schooling families is the flexibility they would have, as well as a low start up cost. You could take as few or as many gardens as you could handle.

How to get started? Well, let’s assume you already know how to garden from personal experience, so you probably have most of the tools needed. In the springtime would be the most labor-intensive time, so you could hire some help to get it started if you needed to. I would think it could be good planning if you signed  up your new customers in the fall or winter before planting time to begin getting the soil ready to plant then.

I’m so excited about this idea, maybe it’s the organic gardener in me, but 10 years ago I would’ve been making plans to start this today. It would’ve been so much fun with the boys and my daughter, but 10 years ago people would’ve thought you’d lost your mind if you asked them to pay you to start a garden for them. Things have changed.

You could get lots of ideas of how it works by thoroughly reading Your Backyard Farmer‘s website. Not feeling confident in your organic gardening knowledge? There’s a great learning project! Have fun!

Flat Belly Diet, Katie Holmes New Haircut, or Olympics #1?

by , under Home business ideas

Olympic Logo 2008

This is ridiculous. I just read the best way to decide on new product or website ideas is to look at the trends on Google. You can find what the top search phrases are on Google at http://www.google.com/press/zeitgeist.html

Now, you guess, which is first, second, and third most searched on this infamous 8-8-08?

Exactly like the title lists them….first is the Flat Belly Diet, second is Katie Holmes new haircut and a few down the line (really) is the Olympics.  Maybe everyone already knows everything they want to know about the Olympics, but I was really surprised at internet searcher’s priorities today.

That just confirms the cardinal rule of business: Do Your Research!  Google trends is a good place to start.

So…….let me guess, what are you going to search on next? ;~)

Just received a book I ordered today called The New Totally Awesome Business Book for Kids, by Arthur Bochner & Rose Bochner. This is a unique edition because it was written by the kids themselves. Mom and Dad wrote the first and second edition, while the kids were growing up. Now you can read their take on having a home business, and it’s well worth the read!

There’s the typical chapters on everything you need to know about starting and running a business which wasn’t too impressive, but what I found fascinating was the 20 ideas they had for businesses that kids could start immediately. Creative takes on some old ideas, like growing the lemons for the lemonade stand, and composting the leaves in the leaf raking business, are some of the greatest ideas I’ve read!

The most interesting idea was the one that obviously Arthur and Rose have seen significant success at, and that is ‘waste management’. No, it’s not a new take on garbage collecting, but then again, it could be seen as that. Waste management, as profited on by the Bochner kids, is assessing and trouble shooting the “waste” that all households commit daily. They have several areas of waste they deal with, from saving water to your electric bill, but it’s one of the best ideas that will not only save their customer’s money every month, but will help save the planet, too. Green business is hot right now, so check out their book for ways to start your own!

Start a Scrapbooking Business-For $1

by , under Home business ideas, Starting It, Teaching It

There’s an E-book out there I discovered today that looks like it could really be worth a try. A homeschool mom that discovered a better way to make money doing what she loves to do most, scrapbooking, has written an e-book detailing exactly how she did it.

She understands how expensive it can get when you go the route of signing up as a scrapbooking rep for a company, and how much materials can be just doing your own scrapbooks-not to mention the time it takes! I thoroughly admire this woman for following her passion and finding a way it can be done, and developing a method others can follow! If you are good at scrapbooking, and would love doing it for extra money, this e-book will give you a step by step guide to how you can do it. There’s checklists, a regular newsletter to keep you up to speed in the market, and lots of ‘inside’ marketing tips.

The best part is she is so sure you will succeed with her method, that she is offering it for only $1 for a 30 day trial. If you find that it isn’t what you thought it was you owe nothing. I think that’s very fair. There are many moms out there that would LOVE to have their photos organized in a scrapbook (like me!) but have NO time to do so. It would be a blessing, and fun, too! But if you find it’s just not what you thought it would be, then you haven’t wasted any money.

If anyone has tried starting a scrapbook business with or without this e-book, please let us know your experiences. It’s always helpful to hear what others have done.

You can find this e book $1 trial at: ScrapVenturePro
