A Virtual Library of Resources For Entrepreneurs

by , under Curriculum, Freebies, Teaching It

Mind Tools websiteI just signed up for Mind Tools newsletter, which offered to send me “New Career Skills”  twice a month along with a personal development planning workbook they say is worth $19.99. Their tagline is “Essential skills for an excellent career“, but it looks to me like so much more.

Leadership skills, problem solving, decision making, project management, practical creativity, time management, stress management, information skills, communication skills and career skills are their main categories with a hefty list of articles under each one. Each article is a concise, but thorough, overview of important skills that every entrepreneur can use in their development of necessary business skills.

Using This Site To Teach Your Homeschool Entrepreneur

Providing an overview of skills that are needed in the workplace is a valuable part of any education. Taking this website as a base of operation, it looks like it could be a convenient way to methodically cover a multitude of subjects. Covering one article each day and discussing how that skill might be used will insure that your homeschool entrepreneur has a well rounded overview of essential business skills. If (when) a weakness in a particular area is revealed, you’ll know to pursue girls at computer-smallthat area more thoroughly. I’m sure you’ll come away with several ideas to further explore essential skills your teen needs for the career(s) they are considering.

Naturally, you will see many products* offered for sale that relate to each category, but I did not see anywhere a requirement to make a purchase to view any of the materials. I’ve yet to completely go through all they have to offer, but I was so excited to share this potential resource with you I couldn’t wait! Isn’t the internet marvelous for homeschooling?

Anyone else have a favorite resource for homeschooling their teen entrepreneurs? Surely your mother taught you to share…:-)

Thanks!

*This is NOT a paid endorsement – in any way. Just one homeschooler’s opinion. And we know there are a lot of them!

Is Business As Missions Not a Choice?

by , under Growing It, Teaching It

time7

I read a post today at the Business as Mission Network that I would love to share with you called, Painted in a Corner – Business as Mission isn’t a Choice, it’s the only option. Justin Forman talks about how he’s noticed how much less you can pack into your life the older you get and how combining your efforts can help.

It always fell on deaf ears when my mother would tell me that time goes faster as we get older. However, as an adult and grandparent, I’m experiencing the reality of her predictions.

However, I’ve discovered it’s not just a prediction or an opinion, it’s a reality. Do the math:

One year for a 10 year old is 10% of their life.

One year for a 50 year old is 2% of their life. So for us baby boomers, to relate to how long a week is really for a 10 year old to wait,  10% of our life would be 5 years.

Did you catch that? The experience of five years as a 10 year-old, now at 50 flies by in just one year.

One more time: (can you tell we homeschooled for 20 years?)

4 years of high school to a 13 year old is almost 31% of their life.  31% of a 50 yr old’s life is 15.5 years. Think about that next time you’re tempted to reassure your teen that their high school years go by quickly. Maybe they do at 50, but not at 13 it doesn’t. It’s eternity.

So, in essence, time really is shrinking for us. What’s my point? The point being made by Justin Forman on the Business as Mission blog post is since relatively, our time shrinks as we grow older, then we need to make the most of it. As Christians, we are all called to ministry in some form, while still obligated to support our families.

1Thessalonians 4:11-12 it says:  Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

Not only by saving time, but making the most of it, if we are able to combine our business and our ministry, how much more effective can we be for the kingdom of God? Let’s go one more step and combine it with our homeschool and parenting training by making a home business a part of our curriculum! That’s redeeming your time.

If you aren’t sure where to start in incorporating business training into your homeschool, there’s a list on the Business as Missions website that I recommend often with the top 25 books on the subject. Making this list or any part of it required reading is a good start. Reading a book together as a family has a tremendous impact…but I don’t need to tell you that. You’ll also find the top places to serve, top BAM video clips and more on their site.
